WordPress – How To Get Started In 5 Easy Steps

Setting up a blog with toady’s technology couldn’t be easier. Many people believe that it is a technical process and you would need a professional to do it. Well this is no longer the case, as you will soon see as you read along.

if you follow along and take action, by the end you will have your very own blog up and running.

Before we get started I would like to explain the variation between WordPress.com and WordPress.org as many people get confused. A wordpress.com blog is a hosted blog service which you do not have to install and setup yourself but it does have restrictions – For example you are unable to install themes and plugins which you may want or like and you are unable to run ads or banners of any kind. WordPress.org is a open-source self-hosted blogging tool which means you are free to do with it as you like with no restrictions and at no cost. This WordPress How To Guide will be walking you through the steps of setting up the latter of the two.

1. There are a few thing that you will need to do before you can start install WordPress, you will need to have a hosting service and a domain name setup first. I am currently using BlueHost.com, but there are many alternatives. Speak to friends and family to see if they can recommend a service to you. When choosing your domain name, choose something appropriate, for example you could use your name or the name of your company if it’s for business purposes. Once you have a hosting service and your domain name setup you are all set and ready to go.

2. The first thing you will need to do is login to the Cpanel of your hosting service. Now scroll down and you will see a panel called ‘Software/Service’ and within this panel you will see an icon called ‘Simple Scripts’ click on it.

3. You will now arrive at the ‘Simple Script’ page with a list of web based applications which you can install. You will see the WordPress script under the title ‘Blogs’. Locate it and click on it now.

4. You will now arrive at the install page. Once there, read through the page and click the ‘Install now’ button. You will now be at the ‘Step 1: Installation Preferences’. he first drop down menu shows different versions of WordPress but you should always set this on the current version, but not a beta version. Now you will need to select which domain name you are going to be installing on. The default domain will be the domain name you chose when you first signed up with your hosting service, if you have more than one like I do you can choose from the drop down menu which domain name you wish to install onto. You can also enter a directory name for which you would like to install onto, like I have done for example – my blogs web address is www.wordpresshowto.biz/blog. Alternatively you can leave it blank which will make your URL www.yourdomainname.com. Next under ‘Step 2: Advanced Options’ in the box provided enter a name for your site for example I entered ‘WordPress How To‘ and then tick the box underneath to ‘Automatically create a new database’. Now all there is to do is to read the ‘Legal Information’ in ‘Step 3’, tick the box and click on the green ‘Complete’ button.

5. Now Simple Script will install your WordPress blog onto your server and once done it will display your site URL, your login URL and finally your Username and Password. You have now got an up and running WordPress blog, just click on the site URL to see your blog. Your site will look very plain and empty for now but this can all be changed very simply.

Happy blogging and thanks for reading.
